The Algecires Conference of 1906 entrusted France & Spain to police the country. The Treaty of Fez was signed 30 March 1912 making Morocco a French protectorate which subsequently France & Spain split into 4 zones with France taking a much larger share. "

No 3 (8 Jul) + Rozoy en Brie /Seine (24 Jul) arrival cds & on back red ink full name & address of destination + Tiassale /Cote d' Ivoire (29 Jun) + partial Bingerville /Cote d' Ivoire (3 Jul) + Auxerre /Yonne (22 & 25 Jul) transit cds ................................................... Rare item & survivor. In the early twentieth century, the Baoulé of central Côte d'Ivoire openly defied colonial authorities until forcibly subdued in a bloody, so-called pacification campaign finalised in 1906 by Governor Gabriel Angoulvant.

Germany invaded France in May 1940 & later divided the country into an Occupied Zone & Unoccpied Zone administered by Vichy France. This item was addressed to the Occupied Zone but arrived in Vichy (UUnoccupied) France probably via Marseilles where the Ne Peut Ettre Achemine /Zone Occupee marking was applied .....Very interesting & intriguing item
