[10640] LIBYA - ITALY…1914 ITALIAN MILITARY FORCES in FEZZAN... 1914 (May 19) Stampless envelope to Naples from Italian soldier cancelled Sokna/Fezzan-Tripolitania with alongside Comando Di Tappa /Socne unit hand stamp & on reverse further strike sealing the envelope & with faint arrival Naples (27 Jul) arrival cds............At the end of the Italo-Turkish War although Tripoli & Cyrenaicia were annexed by Italy they could not control the Arabs in the Fezzan. In early 1913 the Maini column spent 18 months in the desert fighting the Arabs & finally conquerting them in August 1914. However the Italian occupation of the Fezzan was short lived. The demands of man power on the outbreak of World War 1 & the Turkish sponsored Senussi uprising forced the Italians to leave the Fezzan for the coast.

Harriott, AIF Headquarters, Middle East, "Somewhere in Libya" bearing Australia 3d tied A.I.F. Field P.O./16 [1 Dec] d/s & w/triangular Passed By/Censor/No 3093 h/s in violet & with interesting content with transcription included .........The writer Guy Harriott was a War Correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald reporting from the Middle East & Greece area & later the far East, he survived a ship wreck after hitting a mine & sinking in 8 minutes whilst travelling from Tobruck to Alexandria. For deeds in Albania he was mentioned in dispatches, was awarded the Greek Cross of Distinguished Service, he later became the Editor of the paper & was made an OBE. He died aged 66 after a distinguished career
