In 1927 the Shanghai Defence Force was formed to protect British interests on mainland China and remained operational until the outbreak of WW2 this being a nice item of mail between British Military Hospital & China Command on H.K.

East Surrey Regt. sailed for Shanghai Oct 38 & later in Aug 40 were sent to Singapore, in Feb 41 they were sent to Northern Malaya under 11th Indian Div & fought their way south to Singapore losing over a third of their strenght only to be interned as POW's shortly afterwards upon the surrender to the Japanese
